Uni Kuru Toga Roulette Mechanical Pencil Review ( Jeff Abbott is a regular contributor at The Pen Addict. The Uni Kuru Toga is a fantastic mechanical pencil for writing. Recently I was able to get a hold of the upgraded version, the Roulette. The runner-up: Uni-ball – Kuru Toga. This works together with the pencil's rotation mechanism to ensure a sharp point at all times. Uni-ball is one of the most highly regarded brands in the stationery world, and the Kuru Toga is one of the most frequently discussed (and recommended) mechanical pencils by the aficionados. While my main focus is pens, I do find a space for pencils in my arsenal. Uni has developed a special lead for their Kuru Toga pencils, with a soft outer layer and harder inner core. This is standard among most refillable mechanical pencils, but if you've never refilled a pencil before, this isn't obvious, so here it is: 1. In the past I claimed that the standard Kuru Toga is the best mechanical pencil ever, (for the old review) but having used the high grade version now I may have to change that claim. Nothing much to complaint about. When it comes to drawing, the turning mechanism may or may not work that well. The Kuru Toga leaves only a hole by which to access it; others usually have it more open. The Kuru Toga features anodized aluminum, polished steel, chrome colored plastic, a pearl gray body and… a cheap mate gray eraser cap with very visible mold marks. The lead magazine is underneath. You can use standard leads in the Kuru Toga, but I haven’t tested those, so I can’t report on the results. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Uni-ball Kuru Toga (0.5mm) was a standout in our tests. It’s only available in HB and B, and only in the 0.5mm size. Kuru Toga also developed a special lead that is softer on the outside and harder at the core, a contrast to Uni's standard lead which is harder outside but softer inside.
